English 3/4 students will develop their critical thinking skills by reading The Six Most Important Decisions You’ll Ever Make or Sophie’s World during the fall semester. They will also explore the literary roots of Western Civilization beginning with the ancient Greeks and ending with contemporary British classics, such as Animal Farm and Lord of the Flies. Students will analyze and evaluate multi-genre literature, including drama, poetry, fiction, and non-fiction. Major authors include Geoffrey Chaucer and William Shakespeare. The English curriculum follows the Arizona State and Common Core Standards.
In order to be able to effectively express their ideas in written form, all students will write extensively during English 3/4. Students will learn to follow a systematic approach during the writing process: prewriting, rough draft, peer editing, revising, teacher conferencing, and composing a final copy. Types of writing including narration, description, and persuasion will be evaluated using the Six-Trait-Analytical Writing Rubric. Writing time will also be devoted to creative writing and research.
